What does “clean” really mean to you, whether as a cleaning professional or as a consumer?

In this episode of Unscripted, an IICRC video production, two industry professionals break down what cleanliness actually looks like from a technical and realistic standpoint—and how that differs from client expectations.
From ugly traffic lanes that won’t go away to carpets that dry hard or develop musty smells, we cover common cleaning misconceptions and share clear, honest insights. If you’ve ever asked, “Why doesn’t my carpet look like it did when I bought it?” or “Is this odor normal?”

—this is the video for you.

Clean is very subjective. Means different things to different people. I am a carpet cleaner. When I leave, the carpets aren't necessarily clean. They are cleaner than they were before. Hopefully, a little healthier. Carpet cleaning can sometimes be more psychological than physical. It comes down to the perspective of the customer. Both the appearance and the scent can be important. The carpets should look better and having some type of a fresh scent goes a long way in customers minds. Customers have to like and appreciate you as a person for the owner/operator. That's where your referrals come from. For example, yesterday I did a job for a regular customer, today I did his daughter's place. My second job was a referral from a job a couple of days ago in the same townhouse complex. The customer told me that Jenny said I was a nice guy. Being a nice guy can sometimes be better than being the best carpet cleaner in town, though being best helps a lot. On my commercial strata building jobs where I am encapping with the Phoenix, I add a couple of ounces of either Saiger's Mango Cide or his eucalyptus cide. It's not overpowering but just leaves a nice, fresh scent. I get compliments from people walking by, the concierge, even the janitorial staff who tried to steal my contract. Clean is whatever you think it is. Not everyone will share your view.
