I’ve come to believe that in every sector of human existence—whether it’s medicine, leadership, the trades and carpet cleaning—only about 2% of us are truly built to rise to the top.
I’m not talking about the ones who just make the most money. I’m talking about the ones who grow to maturity. The ones who are encouraging, curious, and full of gumption.
In our industry, the 98% are often looking for the shortcut. They want the "splash and dash." They want the easy answer.
But the 2%? We are the "Unicorns."
We are the ones who aren’t afraid of uncertainty.
When a job goes sideways, or a fabric reacts weirdly, or the economy shifts, the 2% don’t panic. We get curious. We lean in. We hold the standard when everyone else is dropping it.
Whether you realize it or not, if you are obsessed with doing it right when no one is watching, you are part of that 2%. You are the leaders, the problem solvers, and the protectors of this trade.
It can feel lonely in the 2%, because standards naturally isolate you from the herd. But don't lower the bar just to fit in.
Our industry doesn't need more Larry Lunchpails. It needs more Unicorns.
