Ive tested (and made) this and if you own a Evo13, it's a wise purchase to get more out of that wand..

What is the point of leaving a big air gap right here that would seem to create a major loss in moisture recovery? Is it because the squeegee portion would otherwise cause it to lock down?

The squeegee was an afterthought that helped deal with the reduced velocity of the immense vacuum chamber on the Evolutions . By containing some of the lost air flow that occurs on the back side of my hard surface Glides it greatly improved how the two work together, but it's not crucial to have a full vacuum seal with these hard surface Glides

Did you collaborate with Hydramaster where it is only sold through them or something? I don't see it on your website, but rather these options for the Evo hard surface adaptation:

Correct

The squeegee was their idea to help with the lack of left that occurs with their wand due to the oversized vacuum chamber.

My HS Glides are a great litmus test to help you determine if a wand has any oompf ...
Asking a wand to extract water while hovering an 1/8 of an inch about a floor will tell you all about your systems complete efficiency...
